Embassy of India Screens ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’ under Bharat Filmotsav – Baku Evenings

The Embassy of India in Azerbaijan organised a special screening of the iconic Hindi film Seeta Aur Geeta as part of Bharat Filmotsav, the Embassy’s celebration of Indian cinema under its cultural outreach initiative Baku Evenings.

The screening witnessed the participation of a diverse gathering of cinema enthusiasts, including young Azerbaijani students, representatives of the media, social media personalities, members and key functionaries of Indian diaspora associations, and friends of India in Azerbaijan.

The audience warmly received the timeless film and enjoyed its engaging storyline, memorable characters, music, humour and the acclaimed performance of veteran actress Hema Malini in the dual roles of Seeta and Geeta.

Released in 1972 and directed by Ramesh Sippy, Seeta Aur Geeta is regarded as one of the enduring classics of Hindi cinema. The film’s compelling blend of comedy, drama, romance and social themes, together with its memorable music and performances, has enabled it to retain its appeal across generations.

The film holds a special place among generations of admirers of Indian cinema in Azerbaijan. Indian films have enjoyed considerable popularity in Azerbaijan for several decades, with audiences developing a particular affection for the music, storytelling and larger-than-life characters characteristic of Hindi cinema. Indian films continue to be familiar to Azerbaijani audiences, forming an important part of the cultural affinity between the two countries.

Seeta Aur Geeta has also enjoyed enduring recognition among Azerbaijani viewers through its television screenings over the years, contributing to a strong and nostalgic connection with the film. Its continued popularity demonstrates the lasting resonance of Indian cinematic storytelling with audiences in Azerbaijan.
