Ambassador’s Address on the occassion of International Day of Yoga-2026

Excellencies, Distinguished Guests, Members of the Diplomatic Corps,
Friends of India, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Namaskar and a very warm welcome to all of you. It is a pleasure to join you this evening as we celebrate the International Day of Yoga 2026.

Your presence reflects the growing global appreciation of yoga as a source of health, well-being, and harmony.

The International Day of Yoga is observed every year on 21 June following its adoption by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014 with the support of an unprecedented number of member states. This global recognition affirmed the universal relevance of yoga and its contribution to the well-being of humanity.

Rooted in India's ancient traditions, yoga is far more than a form of physical exercise. It is a holistic way of life that promotes balance between body and mind, encourages self-discipline and mindfulness, and fosters a deeper sense of connection with ourselves and the world around us. Its enduring appeal lies in its simplicity and accessibility—anyone, regardless of age, background, or level of fitness, can benefit from its practice.

This year's theme, "Yoga for Healthy Ageing," is particularly timely. As life expectancy continues to increase across the world, the focus is shifting from merely living longer to living healthier and more fulfilling lives. Yoga offers valuable tools to support this objective. Through regular practice, it helps improve flexibility, balance, strength, breathing capacity, and mental well-being. Equally important, it promotes resilience, emotional stability, and inner calm—qualities that contribute significantly to healthy ageing.

The message of this theme extends beyond older generations. Healthy ageing begins with healthy living. By incorporating yoga into our daily routines, we invest in our long-term physical and mental well-being, enabling us to lead more active, productive, and balanced lives at every stage of life.

The popularity of yoga in Azerbaijan and around the world demonstrates its ability to transcend cultural, linguistic, and geographical boundaries. It has become a truly global movement that brings people together in the shared pursuit of health, peace, and harmony. In this sense, yoga serves not only individual well-being but also mutual understanding and friendship among communities and nations.

Today, the International Day of Yoga has been celebrated with great enthusiasm across the world. Millions of people have participated in yoga sessions at public spaces, educational institutions, workplaces, and iconic landmarks, reflecting yoga's universal appeal and its growing role in promoting health, well-being, and harmony across cultures and communities.

As we come together on this International Day of Yoga, let us embrace the values that yoga represents—balance, mindfulness, compassion, and harmony—and carry them into our daily lives. In doing so, we can contribute not only to our own well-being but also to healthier and more resilient communities.

I wish you all a meaningful and enjoyable celebration and a rewarding yoga session ahead.

Thank you. Namaste.
